The smell of fennel always reminds one of our very favorite employees--ok, so maybe just the employee who is writing this right now--of when she first moved to the Bay Area. Exciting and spicy and full of fresh possibilities!

Its native home is the Mediterranean, where it has since migrated by trade all around the world. It is used in various cuisines, with delicious results! In India, it is also commonly used (in plant form, not oil form) as an after-dinner gas reliever and breath freshener. And, pagan Anglo-Saxons included it as part of a “Nine Herbs Charm” meant to cure poisonings.

Although we do NOT recommend the ingestion of any of our essential oils, since we are not doctors and cannot prescribe safe dosages, the ability of fennel essential oil  to safely relieve muscle spasms when taken internally has been researched with promising results*. There is reason to believe it may have the same effects when inhaled or used on the skin.

In aromatherapy it is used as a stimulant, and at least one study found that the inhalation of fennel essential oil activated the sympathetic nervous system, which is in charge of the “feed and breed” instinct.

So uh, you can guess what that might mean.
