If you used to wonder as a kid why the Three Wise Men gave baby Jesus money for his birthday, you aren’t alone (get it? Franken-cents?). But as it turns out, the word “frankincense” actually comes from the Old French “franc,” meaning “free.”

True to its name, frankincense resin has been burned during religious ceremonies across the world for thousands of years, in order to purify and cleanse the spirit. This ancient myth may have some merit. One 2008 study suggests a chemical called “incensole acetate,” contained in frankincense smoke, may have psychoactive properties which were found to alleviate anxiety and depression in mice*. (This begs the question, how does one measure mouse mental maladies? The scientists have left us hanging on that one.)

Scientists have also researched the potential anti-microbial*, anti-fungal*, and even cancer fighting properties* of frankincense essential oil, with some promising initial results.

Use frankincense oil when you’re looking for something to help you relax, unwind, or uhhhh… find spiritual enlightenment? No promises on that last one.
